In many ways NetKernel functions as a software operating system.

The resource oriented computing abstraction presents a logical view of information processing. This abstraction is realized by an operating-system caliber kernel that orchestrates physical level code beneath, and isolated from, the logical level.

The kernel in NetKernel is very small and implements the low level, essential elements of the resource oriented computing abstraction. On top of the kernel is layer0, a module providing the NetKernel Foundation API (NKF API). NKF is used by all the upper level parts of NetKernel, including the Standard Module and the extensions to the logical level.
